If you know me, you know I travel a lot. And, all of that travel gives me experience on how to make family vacations a part of our everyday life. My parents instilled in me from a young age the importance of connecting as a family, even if it meant we went to a local hotel with an indoor pool. We still felt like we were on vacation. With electronics and life distractions these days it’s even more important to make family trips a part of your life – even if it’s driving distance.
So today’s tip is ….. vacation layaway!
Did you know that in most instances you can book a resort (all inclusive, Disney, Universal you name it) with only a small deposit? I’m talking $200-$300? I think about where we want to go next year, make a small deposit and then I divide the balance by the number of months I have left to travel.
Doing it this way makes the payments super low AND by the time we travel we don’t have any large credit card bills to pay off. For airfare, I use apps that predict the prices and I buy when the price is low low low!! This way works for our family and gives us the opportunity to travel every summer (sometimes twice in a summer!)
Certain retailers are getting in on this trend as well because they understand that your average family needs time to save for that big vacation. Disney, for example, offers a Disney Savings Account which automatically calculates monthly payments and even automatically deducts them from a credit card or bank account.
Last year, we went on a week long Disney Cruise to some spectacular locations – Grand Cayman, Cozumel and more. I stumbled upon the Disney Savings Account online. I entered the total amount of my trip, it told me how much time I had to save and then I made payments each month. And the best part? The money was always mine – it basically just collects in an account and I can use it however I’d like. I can even pull all the money out if our plans changed. No fees either. Then, if you do go ahead and book a Disney branded vacation like we did, they send you a $20 gift card for every $1000 spent. That ended up covering some drinks and fun on our cruise!
It’s just about finding the way that works best for your family. It is possible to take a vacation – you just have to plan ahead and get creative!
…… Until next Tuesday, I wish you palm tree dreams.
